Nissan Repair: speedometer, speedometer cable, plastic pin

Question
I HAVE AN 88 PATHFINDER,V-6,4WD,AUTO AND I HAVING A PROBLEM WITH MY SPEEDOMETER. I TOOK THE DASH OFF TO PUT MACHINE OIL ON MY ELECT. SPEEDOMETER BECAUSE IT WAS STICKING SOMETIMES AT 15 MPH. THE OIL HELP SOME, SO I TOOK APART AGAIN TO ADD ALITTLE MORE OIL. BUT THIS TIME WHEN I PUT BACK TOGETHER MY SPEEDOMETER DOESN'T MOVE AT ANY SPEED. I THINK IT HAS TO DO WITH THE PLASTIC PIN AND SPRING WITH AN O-RING AROUND THE PLASTIC TUBE THAT CONNECTS THE CABLE TO THE SPEEDOMETER. HOW DOES THE CABLE TURN THIS PLASTIC PIN? IT SEEMS LIKE IT JUST FLOATS IN THE CABLE SOCKET WITH THE SPRING KEEPING THE PIN EXTENDED SO IT GOES IN THE BACK OF THE SPEEDOMETER. I DON'T SEE WHAT TURNS THIS PIN ASSY BECAUSE IT'S NOT CONNECTED TO THE CABLE DIRECTLY. CAN YOU PLEASE HELP ME WITH THIS, WHAT AM I DOING WRONG? THANKS YOU FOR YOUR HELP.

Answer
Hal,

Check the speedometer with a drill motor to see if it is defective.  If it works pull the speedometer cable and inspect it and lubricate.  The o-ring is just a seal and the plastic pin actually connects the cable to the speedometer.  If the pin breaks off you have to replace the cable.
