Hi Von,

I own a '96 Nissan skyline and i found that there seems to be an occasional gear slip (the gear slip back to nuetral when release the cluth to get the car move). I'm assuming this is an issue with my shifter, should i change a short shifter or how can I fix this and is it a major repair?
Thank you

Kind regards,

Jason,

You have a Skyline?  If you want you can bring it by my house.  I live in Las Vegas...  Well, yes, the gear and balking ring need to be replaced for first gear.  The car has so much torque that the teeth have rounded and now they will not stay in gear.  It must be nice to the Japanese super car.  Email me back and let me know what you get hooked up with.  There is a place in San Deigo K Wantanabe that does imports of Japanese engines and transmissions.  Check it out as a source.  I assume you are in the U.S.

Answer
Jason,

If the car pops into neutral in other gears they need replacement too.  The car has mounds of torque and after ten years the teeth are worn down.  It is not that big an issue if you can get parts.  Rear wheel drive parts are less for the most part than front wheel drive parts.  Remember that it is a Skyline and it spanks those gears when you floor it.
