Nissan Repair: Overdrive Off light is on., nassan, highway speeds

Question
Hi,

I have a '91 Nassan Maxima. My OVERDRIVE OFF light is on? Why is it on? Is it a bad thing? If so, how can I fix it or turn it off?

Answer
There is a button on the shifter that turns your overdrive light on and off. If pushing the button does not turn it off, then it is most likely a faulty relay for the overdrive.
The overdrive is used for highway speeds reaching above 50-60 mph. It assists greatly in fuel economy on long trips.
It is not a bad thing except it makes your engine operate at a higher than needed rpm.
I would fix it as soon as possible, as I like to keep my vehicle road ready at all times.
