Nissan Repair: maf sensor, mass airflow sensor, wire snips

Question
I had a mechanic look at my 00 maxima and he said that the computer is recieving a dirty air message but not bad enough to trip a error code. He came to a conclusion that the MAF needed replaced but said that he couldnt do it.? He told me that I had to take it to the nissan dealer to have it done. Is this true? do they have to reprogram the computer to the new maf? I hope that you can shed some light on this. Thanks

Answer
Justin,

The mass airflow sensor is a plug an play replacement.  The big part here is not to touch the pins that the connector goes onto with your fingers as you do not want to blow the new electronics.  Also, disconnect the battery before you do the replacement.  It is connected to the air filter box and it is easy to replace.  A screwdriver, a ten millimeter socket and wire snips to cut the bundle ties to get the harness loose.  Use zip ties to tie the cable back down after you complete the replacement.  Then, hook up the battery and you are done.
