Nissan Repair: Engine stops when a/c is on, nissan stanza, nissan sentra

Question
When I turn my a/c on in my '95 Nissan Sentra, the engine slows down and will stop if I do not give it some petal. This happened several years ago and the mechanic who fixed it told me that the system needed charged.  I had it checked recently and was told the pressure was ok indicating a good charge, and since it cools fine, I assume it is in fact charged.  I have noticed that the warmer the outside temperature, the sooner it starts this.  It will run properly for a while before the engine will quit.  It will only quit then when i release the clutch to shift gears or come to a stop. Is there some kind of temperature switch or pressure switch that could be bad?

Answer
Donna,

The engine is in need of having the throttle body cleaned and probably a tuneup.  You see, when you turn the airconditioner on it puts a load on the engine and the computer steps up the idle to compensate.  You could get the throttle body checked out to see if the idle needs to be adjusted and if the dashpot that the throttle stop rests against is going out.  I have an 87 Nissan Stanza and it had this problem and it turned out that all I needed to do was up the idle 50 RPMs and clean the throttel body and it works great.  If you airconditioner works great it is not that unless the compressor is going out and really putting a load on the engine.  But, since you had it repaired recently I doubt it.
