Nissan Repair: transmission, no reverse, forward gears, torque converter

Question
hello, I have a '95 pathfinder and about 4 months after I bought it the reverse gear started slipping that was last november. Now there is no reverse at all. However the forward gears are functioning perfectly and the 4wd is too. I would like to know your opinion on this matter. thank you, Dan Jones

Answer
Dan,

The transmission is going to have to be opened up to repair the reverse and if you are going to the expense and trouble I would go through the transmission with a rebuild kit and renew all the clutches and bands.  I always replace the torque converter and pump as a rule to eliminate low pump pressure or an old torque converter taking out my new transmission.  The other option is to drive it until it drops and then rebuild it.  When short on cash I have done that...  I had a 65 Mustang that I drove for years and made sure where I parked I could pull away since backing was not an option.
