Nissan Repair: Q-45 just stops running, infinity q45, shaft seal

Question
I have a 1990 Infinity Q45 with 150,000 miles. This car just stops running, sometimes while at idle, sometimes when driving. It will run smooth as glass then sometimes under hard acceleration it misses badly, other times it runs like a bat out of hell. I took the fuel filter hose off and turned on the key. Plenty of fuel was coming out. I took it to an ASE mechanic and it would not act up. It stopped 7 times on the way home. It always starts again-so far-. I don't trust this car and will not drive it. Any ideas.

Answer
Chris,

I bet the distributor is going out.  Nissan uses an optical pickup and receiver under the cover of the distributor and with age the shutter wheel gets oil on it from a leaky shaft seal.  If you have the distributor taken apart and there is oil on the shutter wheel you have found the problem.  Replace the distributor with a rebuilt one and you should be fine.
