Nissan Repair: 96 Maxima wont start, nissan maxima, pep boys

Question
My car in a '96 Nissan Maxima.  About 4 days ago when I started my car I noticed a humming noise when I turned my car and at lower speeds.  Also the check battery light came on and the air bag light but when i turned my car off and let is sit for a little and started it up both lights had turned off but the humming noise stayed.  Everything seemed fine beside that.  When I went to start my car the other morning it was dead but still clicked when I turned the key.  I then got my car jumped and let it sit but as soon as I but the car in drive it stalled out.  I then jumped it again and let is sit.  When I put it in drive it worked at first but then just died when going from reverse to drive while pulling out of the parking lot.  I then tried to jump it again so I could park it and put up the windows but this time it wouldn't start or get enough power to put the windows up.  When I tried to turn the key the only thing that happened was the needles moved little like they do when you start the car but no clicking or anything besides that.  I was told by people it was the alternator and if so can I remove that myself (I am somewhat handy). Also I replaced the battery about 2 months ago.  I hear that to test the alternator and battery I need to have my battery fully charged how would one ago about that also.  Thank you for your time and any help it greatly appreciated.

Answer
Michael,

It sounds like your alternator has given up.  Get the battery re-charged and replace the alternator and you should be good to go.  Pep Boys or Checker have good deals on their alternators and a lifetime warranty if you are going to do it yourself.  If not Pep Boys can install it for you if you have the time.  It seems like they are always busy but the price is cheap.
