Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: fuel, olds cutlass supreme, throttle body injection

Question
i have an 89 olds cutlass supreme and recently ran out of gas.  I filled the tank with about 6 gal of gas and attempted to start the car.  The motor would turn over and ran for about 5 sec.  I replaced the fuel filter and the car would stay running for about 10 seconds and die. I can hear the fuel pump running but that's about it.  I am a college student and can't afford to take the car to a shop..........any suggestions?  I was told that the fuel pump might have been damaged by attempting to start the car after it ran out of fuel.

Answer
Hello Robert,
It's possible that it was damaged, but really, I doubt it. If you can hear it running, I would want to test the pressure.
A parte house might loan you a pressure tester, if you agree to buy needed parts from them, and I would try that.
I believe you have throttle body injection, so I would want about 13 PSI at all times, especially when running.
If you get that, or at least better than 11, then the pump is ok, and you need to look elsewhare.

Trash in the tank is a possability, so another filter may be needed.

But check the pressure first.
