Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: 1994 Olds Trasmission, olds cutlass supreme, olds cutlass

Question
Hi Thank you for your time and expertise.  I have a 94 Olds cutlass supreme SL 3.1 liter that is leaking ATF profusely from the trasmission on the final drive where the shaft comes out of the transmission and connects to the uni joints that connect to the wheel.  It is on the drivers side where the whole transmission and engine are covered in one housing and this housing is also connected to the motor mount.  I have a couple of questions.  First is it a bearing, seal or both. It began leaking suddenly and to my knowledge did not leak before?  Also is it possible to repair it without removing the engine and transmission as the housing is connected to the motor mount?  Again thank you for you time.

Answer
It is most likely that the inner axle seal is leaking and you can replace the seal without pulling the trans or engine out.

1. remove the tire and wheel and seperate the steering tie rod end and the ball joint on the drivers side and remove the large NUT that is on th end of the axle shaft.

2. Remove the brake caliper and secure it out of the way.

3. Remove the brake rotor.

4. Pull the Knuckle assembly off of the lower control arm and off of the outer axle shaft.

5. The inner axle shaft is held into the trans by a SPLIT RING and all you have to do is insert a large pry bar between the transmission and the inner axle joint and POP the axle out of the transmission.

6. remove the complete axle assembly from the vehicle and remove the transmission axle seal and inspect the inner axle splines for damage where it goes into the final drive inside the transmission and check for bushing damage right behind the seal.

It sounds like a very complex project but it is not that hard to do.

If your pretty mechanically inclined, I can provide you with all of the diagrams and procedures.
