Pontiac Repair: bypass safty switch, neutral safety switch, purple wire

Question
Hi I have a 2004 aztek that won't start.  I think it's the safety neutral switch .  also when i move the electric plug in on the shifter it clicks on the steering wheel.  Is the any way to bypass this switch to confirm mu hunch?.

Answer
Hi jack:

try this first put the car in neutral with your foot on the brake and try to start it? If it starts the neutral safety switch on the tranmission is bad. if it still will not crank you can bypass the sawitch to see if it starts jump the yellow wire to the purple wire I believe on that car. You can then check the jumped wire with a test light to ground it should light up with the key in the crank position. Do not leave it like that because the transmission will not shift with the switch unplugged and you will not have reverse lights either. If that doesn't do it then you need to trace the loss of power to the starter and or the switch. that car has a crank relay in the under hood fues box you can see if that relay clicks with the key in crank. If not then you may have a wiring issue on that car there is a plug near the brak master cylinder I think it has 8 or 10 wires in it the harness rubs through on the bracket and either breaks or it's a source for high resistance because the insulation is rubbed off and the wire corrodes. It's a yellow wire to look for. If that doesn't do it you may have a bad ignition switch. Those cars were noted for ignition switch issues and also Body control module issues, BUT if it were a BCM issue the radio would say locked on the display and usually the power windows will not work either.  good luck :-)
