Pontiac Repair: white smoke, head gaskets, fuel mixture

Question
I have a 1993 Pontiac Grand-Am GT with a quad four engine. The car only has 54,000 miles on it but that maybe the problem. I don't drive it regularly and when I started it up it stumbled for a couple of minutes then started running smoothly but it started putting out considerable white smoke. The smoke goes away when I drive the car but returns when I stop and then accelerate. Other than the smoke the car runs great but I'm concerned as the what is the problem I put in some K44 cleaner but it didn't seem to help. There is one other thing that I have no idea if it is related or not but when I increase RPM's when the car is sitting still there is a noise (almost like a chime) that comes from the rear of the car. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer
Hi John:

that year and engine are right in the time frame that they engines had bad head gaskets water vapor out the tail pipe is normal especially if it's cold and damp out or the car has sit an extended paeriod of time. White smoke would indicate that the engine it trying to burn coolant. QAlso the fact that it runs rough on a cold start would also indicate that the fuel mixture can't burn when ther is coolant mised in the cylinders. have the cars cooling system pressure tested. good luck :-)
