Pontiac Repair: 2005 Grand Prix ran hot., coolant temp, engine temp

Question
2005  3800 series III engine. Non supercharged.

Wife said temp gauge went into red. Information screen said AC had shut off. Temp went back down, slowly went back to red and information screen gave info on coolant. Temp went back down.
I checked and there was a small amount of steam coming from passenger side engine. Cranked the engine. Temp is out of red area,but higher than the usual range, both fans are working properly. No water in oil. No oil in water.
Help????

Answer
Hi Phillip:
If there is steam there is a leak. Being that it's on the passenger side it's either a water pump leaking or the platic bypass elbow that goes from the intake manifold to the belt tensioner assembly. there is nothing else there that usually leaks. do not keep driving it with the temp in the red range you'll cook the engine for sure. when it's cold top of the system with a 50/50 mix of water and dex-cool not green antifreeze. Dex-cool is GM's brand of coolant it's orange in color. good luck :-}
