Pontiac Repair: 1992 grand am stalls, ac delco parts, crank sensor

Question
Hello,
I have a 1993 grand am with 2.3 sohc 270,000 and when it warms up after a bout 1/2 hour it will stall usually while idling at stoplight, will restart in a few minutes. I suspected ignition components under the the metal housing. I put a temp probe on ecm and car would stall at the same temp and would restart at the same temp a few degrees cooler. This scenario repeated three times in a row so I put a complete ecm and igniter assembly on from used parts store and it still stalls and will always restart a few minutes later. No lights come on the instrument panel until it has stopped. Thanks, Randy

Answer
Hi randy:

I think your right on. It's either a crank sensor or an ignition module but with that many miles on it it could be anything! The most likley component would be the crank sensor. that is in the block bu the oil filter it has 2 wires going to it a purple and yellow. BE VERY CAREFUL when yoiu take it out. twist and pull and use some penetrating oil to help get it out. the o-ring that hold it in place and stops the oil from leaking past it bloats out and become hard and brittle and makes it had to get it out of the block. Use only an OEM paryt from the dealer or an ac delco parts store. I would also look at the ground wires wher the engine and transmission attach together towards the front of the car tug on the wires if any break you found an issue there. if any of them show signs of corrosion replace them. last thing to look at is the throttle body and the idle control valve very un likely but as maintence clean the throttle body and take the idle control motor out and clean the pitel at the end. good luck :)
