Pontiac Repair: 87 Pontiac grand am fuel filter, liter engines, rd gear

Question
I have my mothers 87 grand am SE 4 cyl.  74,000 miles, always garaged, it stalls once in awhile will driving in hot & slow conditions, feels like a fuel filter issue, ( its has always sat 7-8 months of year in garage) I don't know where the filter is, or the task to solve.  I am pretty good mechanic on old style of cars, this one is fuel injected 4 cyl.   It is getting fuel pressure, just seems to kind of stall & choke, shakes the car then rolls to a stop dead, several attempts to crank and rev a bit solve the issue and you head off.  Could use an experts tips & help.  thanks. byron

Answer
Hi Byron:

the fuel filter is under the car by the gas tank on the left side of the car actaully rearward of the tank. if this always stalls out hot comming to a stop and it shankes before it stalls like a stick shift car you forget to depress the clutch at a stop then chances are it needs a torque converter slutch solenoid and 3'rd gear switch. pretty common on those old 125 3 speed trasnmissions. for the most part those old 2.5 liter engines don't have stalling issue. I assume that is the engine it has in it? hope that helps you out. good luck :-}
