Pontiac Repair: 92 Firebird low idle/dies at stop, electric cooling fan, throttle plate

Question
I have a 92 Firebird with 3.1 V6. It drives great until you let off the gas to come to a stop. As you pull up to a light, the idle drops way off, almost to the point of cutting off, most times. It has died a couple times. I can put the car in N and start it right back up. It seems to develop after the car has warmed up to temp. I just bought the car back from a friend I sold it to five years ago. He replaced the idle control valve Sunday before I picked it up for that very reason. It is still doing it. I read that it may need to relearn or may not be postioned right. Or that it may even be the TCC. I dont want to throw parts at it till I find the issue. Your help is greatly appreciated.........Scott

Answer
Hey scott:

there are a few issue it could be with this. that engeinwas prone for stalling and idle erratic issues. do this first. disconnect the battery and take the snorkel off between the air claner and the engine and clean the throttle plate and throttle bore with carb or intake system cleaner. put the snorkel back on reconnect the battrey turn the a/c off apply the parking brake and start the car and let it run you may need to boost the idle up by pressing on the gas to clear out the carb cleraner but then let it idle down and put it in gear and make sure it will hold with the parking brake take your foot off the brake and let it run for 10 minutes or untill the electric cooling fan turns on if equipped. then shur the car off wait 1 minute restart it again and see what happens let it run for 5 minutes more or untill the fan comes on again. see what happens then. if you still have issues there is a old service bulletin for a stall idle condion this is the bulletin # 92-6-44 I have no idea if the parts are even still avaiable for it or not being that the car is 19 years old. good luck :)
