Pontiac Repair: water pump 2001 Sunfire, gasket, impeller

Question
Started with the water pump going out. Replaced it with a new one right away and also checked that it was the right one! Drove the car about 10 minutes and it started over heating and steam coming from under the hood.  Got it towed back home took it apart again and here the brand new gasket was in pieces whats up with that? Do we just need to replace the gasket or the whole works again?  Thanks you for your time.

Answer
Hi Becky:

you shlould be able to just replace the gasket as long as the gasket didn't damage the impeller on the pump. here is a tip. but some spary gasket adhesive and glue the gasket to the pump before you installit back on the engine that way it will not fall into the engine and get cought in the pump. Hopefully you didn't over heat the engine bad enough to damage anything. Good luck :)
