Pontiac Repair: 95 Pontiac Firebird Gear shift off by one, pontiac firebird, shift cable

I have just noticed that all the gears in my 1995 3.4L V6 Pontiac Firebird are off by one. Park is now reverse, reverse is now neutral, neutral is now over drive, etc. What could have caused this, and how can I get it fixed?

not sure how it happened but you can try disconnecting the shift cable at the trans and manually shifting the trans to park, then put the shifter in park and reconnect the cable, if it goes out again i would have to say that the cable is frayed or stretched
