Pontiac Repair: 1999 sunfire front end noise, wheel bearing hub assembly, steering wheel

Question
This Sunfire is a 2.2 5 speed and makes a loud whining noise from the front end at over 20 mph. It gets worse to 60 mph and then reduces a bit. I changed the tires but it didn't help much.  Any ideas.

Answer
Hi John:

is the noise more of a whine/humm or for sure a whistle? if it's a whine or whistle noise see if it changes pitch when you turn the steering wheel like changing lanes on the high way in either direction. if the noise changes and either get louder or is softer turning in one direction or the other trhe noise is from a bad wheel bearing (hub assembly) the only other noise would be from the brake sensors touching the rotors but that is more of a screetch noise and it wouldn't come and go it would pretty much be ther all the time.. I assume it doens't make this noise just sitting in neutral and you rev up the engine? if so then it can be anything that the serpantibe belt drives like an a/c compressor p/s pump  alternator or water pump etc... Good luck :0
