Pontiac Repair: 1994 pontiac grand am, headlamp switch, pontiac grand am

Question
QUESTION: My question is,where is the location of the rear parking lights switch in a 1994 grand am, the lights do not work only the brake lights work, I cannot drive after dark because of this.  I was told I may have to buy the whole steering column,  in order to get the switch, is that true? Also sometimes I have trouble with the turn signals, help??!! please, Thank you, Yvonne

ANSWER: Hi Yvonne:

the headlamp switch is part of the parking lamps switch it's all in one in the steering column. Do the front parking lamps work? I assume yes?? You could have an issue with the switch where the branch of that circuit comming out of the head lamp switch is bad or a bad splice in that circuit going to the rear of the car. Also make sure none of the fuses are blown. Good luck :)

QUESTION: Can you tell me how to remove the steering column so that I may check the wires within? Thanks Yvonne

Answer
You don't have to remove it to check the wires. You can remove the upper and lower plastic covers and it will expose all the wires going to the switches. There are three screws that attacth the upper and lower steering column covers tothers on this car I belive. It's been a while since I had one apart. The cover that goes around the lock cylinder just pops off and the three screws are in the bottom cover remove them and the upper and lower parts should just come off.
