Pontiac Repair: 92 Pontiac Grand Prix 3.1 L - Stalling Problems, pontiac grand prix, grand prix 3

Question
Hey, Todd. You've answered by questions before and have always been right, so in my darkest hour - I once again turn to you.

I recently replaced the battery in my 92 as part of ongoing project to fix this thing up. My lights were dimming and the idle was really rough. The new battery fixed that problem like a charm, but only to replace it with a new one. On occasion, my car likes to stall out after a start or when I apply the brakes at a stop.

I've heard opinions pointing to everything from the fuel filter, to the air filter, and even the transmission slipping. I can assure you, for my wallet's and your time's sake - it's not the transmission. My own research has mentioned something involving the idle control codes in the computer needing to be re-inputted after a battery change.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Answer
Hi Josh:

You car needs an Idle relearn proceedure. do this. disconnect the battery again. get some carb cleaner and clean the throttle body and throttle plate on the car. reconnect the battery. set the parking brake on the car MAKE SURE IT WORKS AND HOLDS BEFORE YOU TRY THIS. start the car up with the a/c OFF. you may need to feather the gas a bit to keep it running at first. then just let the car idle wile in gear. stay in the car incase the parkinf brake doesn't work! let the car run for 10 minutes or untill the elsctric cooling fan comes on for the radiator whisch ever comes first. then put the par in park turn off the key wait about 30 seconds and start the car and put it in gear again with the parking brake on and let it run for another 5 minutes or untill the fan comes on gain. that should do it for you.

Good luck :)
