Pontiac Repair: Changing oil filter in 1990 pontiac 6000 LE (L4 motor), 1990 pontiac 6000, aluminum material

Question
QUESTION: Now that I have the oil filter cover off, how do I remove the oil filter? Do I need a special tool? And I assume the filter I bought at Meijer (used fram lookup), is not correct. Are they special order or do auto parts stores stock them?
Thanks,
Paul

ANSWER: Hey paul:

It's be a LONGGGGG time since I have worked on one of those. It's the one with the filter inside the oil pan your takling about? If that's the case just a pair of plired to gram it and it will come out. The filter is actually in the oil pump assembly. There is a big o-ring around the outside of the filter and that swells up if you use a cheap brand of filter and it makes it hard to get them out of that housing. Being that this car is almost 20 years old it's not a part that they would have on the shelf I would think. If you go to a good parts store like NAPA or Carquest they should have them. A place like autozone or advance I don't think they would have one on hand. Good luck :)

QUESTION: Yep, the filter is inside the oil pan. Is the filter threaded inside the assembly? I tried to grab the center of the filter and turn it only to have the thin aluminum material began to break and tear.  Thanks again!

Answer
Then that is the one I was think of no it's not threaded in there. Like I said the or ring on the outside of the filter swells and they get stuck. Especially cheap aftermarket ones. Plies work if you can get a big piece of it I have also use a long screw driver to pierce the metal case of it and pried them out Just be careful you done damage the threads in the pan or the pump housing the filter is sitting in.
