Pontiac Repair: Replacing the hub assembly, wheel bearing, brake rotor

Question
Hi, i was recently told by my tire place when i was getting the tires rotated n oil changed that my bearings are going bad and need to be replaced on my 2003 grand prix se, and in order to do that we had to replace the entire hub assembly. they wanted 800 dollars to do it, but my friend who is a car guy checked the price on the parts and said we could just do it ourselves for a couple hundred dollars parts no problem. my question is how complicated is the job and could we really do it ourselves?

Answer
Hi
It is not that complicated.
It is 75% the same as doing a front brake job, meaning that 75% of the job is the same as a brake job.
The difference will be taking off the axle not (34mm).
The removing the 3 bolts that hold the hub to the spindle.
I also would remove the tie rod from the spindle, so the wheel can be turned easily.
I Hope this helps
below is the EXACT procedure from GM.
Good Luck

Raise and support the vehicle.
Remove the tire and wheel.
Disconnect the wheel speed sensor electrical connector (2), if equipped.
Remove the wheel speed sensor electrical connector from the bracket, if equipped.
Remove the front wheel drive shaft nut (2). Insert a drift or flat-bladed tool (1) into the caliper and rotor to prevent from turning.
Remove the brake rotor.
Important: Ensure that the wheel drive shaft outer seal/boot is not damaged.
Remove the wheel bearing/hub and splash shield-noting the position of the shield for re-installation.
