Pontiac Repair: Draining the Fuel out of a 97 Grand Am, chevron techron, amp fuse

Question
Hey Todd... while I was deployed overseas my wife allowed her '97 Grand Am to sit for about 2 years as she drove my car. It won't start and I'm assuming at this point that it is varnished fuel. I've tried to get a hose down into the fuel take to try to siphon it out, but I can't seem to get to the fuel tank. I guess my question is: A) Is there an anti-siphon type device or a  filter in the way? B) If siphoning is out then what is the best way to go about removing the fuel?
-Thanks
Matthew

Answer
Hi Matthew:

First off welcome home and thank you for doing your duty!! Yes there is a roll over valve in the filler neck so you can't suck it out. If this has a 6 cylinder engine in in you can put a fule pressure gage on the pressure tap on the fuel rail it is up by the power steering pump. if it has a 4 cylinder it's a bit harder there is no tap so you have to disconnect one of the hoses up by the engine. What you then have to do is jump the fuel pump relay to run the pump and drain the tank. Or you can just unplug the pump under the car and in that plug there are large and small gauge wires the fuel pump wires are larger wires Grey is the pump power and the black one is the pump ground. Run the balck one to a good ground. and the grey one to the battery you may want to put a fuse in that wire you don't want to overheat the pump the fuse will blow before the pump is damaged. A 15 amp fuse will surfice. The other problem is if indded it is a varnish issue that that stuff is up in the injectors as well. If it does start and run buy a good quaility fuel injector cleaner and put it in the tank Chevron Techron is excellent! ! Good luck :}
