Pontiac Repair: DRL Issue on 96 Grand Am SE (Canada)..., fog lamps, daytime running lights

Question
I got a 96 Grand Am SE, 4 door, 3.1L. The problem is with the daytime running lights. During the day, the hi-beam indicator will flash unless I turn the headlight on manually. At night, the dash illuminates on its own, and the parking lights come on, but the headlights will only come on if I turn them on manually. So I figure the photoresistor is working, and I've checked the drl relay the best way I know how (I swapped it with the isolation relay and all the symptoms are the same) and I figure if the isolation relay wasn't working I wouldn't get any lights at all. And I don't know where the drl control module is located, or if there even is a separate one. Any help would be appreciated, even if it means completely disabling the drl system. The most annoying part of all this is the flashing indicator during the day. Thanks.

Answer
Hey Marc:

heres tyhe deal the issue is with the wiring to the drl system. Ther are a couple of splices in the forward lamp harness one or more of them are corroded. They do souch a "good job" of keeping them out of the weather! you have to remove all the tape from the front harness and look for the bad splice/splices. start at the relay's in the center of the car and work out towards both headlamps. You will be amazed at what you see. I can't tell you which ones are bad but I would syat that you have more than one. The wire colors of interest are orange, brown, grey,lt green and lt blue. In some caes even a purple wire if this has fog lamps. the most commom one to go bad is a power feed that feeds more than one of those relays in that center area and it's usually an ornage wire. Good luck :) Also be careful not to cut the wire insulation when you remove thetape. Use a seam splitter that you can get from a sewing store it will protect trhe wires from getting nicked. If you nick one you'll be back in ther again in a few months doing it all over again! Happy holidays!
