Pontiac Repair: Windshield defroster, windshield defroster, honest estimate

Question
I have a 2001 Montana in which the windshield defroster does not have any airflow. The local Pontiac dealer says the Mode Door is broken and the labor will be $500 and the new part will cost $25.24 Does this sound like a honest estimate? Is there any shortcuts to replacing the Mode Door? How much of the dash has to be removed? I'm able to do some repairs with my limited time, brakes etc. Should I attempt this? Thanks...

Answer
Hi Ed:
Nope that job is ver involved! The whole dash board has to be removed and the cross brace that goes from "a" pilllar to "a" pillar and well as the heater box it's self. It's about a 6 or 7 hour job that is why the labor is so hight. It's right on. There is also some kind of an issue onm that year van as well if memore serves me that if you have an issue with not enough air flow out of the dash vents that there is a door on the other side of the heater box that has to be disconnect. Just a FYI on that while they are in there. ...... I just looked that up the bulletin for that issue is # 03-01-38-013A . Yours amy not be doing this but if it does that will fix that issue as well. Good luck :)
