Pontiac Repair: Car blowing up with no oil?, competent mechanic, oil level

Question
My car was very low on oil, and it toom me a week or two to put a quart in.  Someone told me if the oil runs out, the car could "blow up."  Does this mean the car will literally burst into flames, killing me?  Is that an exaggeration, or will something worse happen?  Will my car explode like a bomb went off?

Answer
No, it will not blow up but your engine may dislodge needed parts ;-). Seriously though running an engine low on oil can damage the engine internally causing a major financial setback. Have a competent mechanic find the leak(s) and have them repaired but in the meantime keep the oil level topped off
