MY DAUGHTER'S 1995 GRAND PRIX RAN OUT OF GAS. WE PUT 5 GALLONS OF GAS BACK INTO IT. WE TRIED STARTING IT AND ALL IT DOES IS TURN OVER.IT WAS RUNNING FINE BEFORE THIS HAPPEN. IT DOES HAVE SPARK.IF IT IS THE FUEL PUMP, HOW DO YOU REPLACE IT? THANKS KARL
Answer -
First of all, it cant be a 1.4 liter in your daughters Grand Prix. General Motors does not make a 1.4L.
If the fuel pump is bad, you have to remove the gas tank to replace it. The pump is inside the tank.

FIRST OF ALL I'M SORRY, THE ENGINE IS A 3.4L . A TYPO. COULD YOU BE A LITTLE MORE SPECFIC IN YOUR ANSWER. COULD YOU GIVE A HINT TO TEST IF THE FUEL PUMP IS BAD OR MAYBE IT COULD BE SOMETHING ELSE. IF IT IS THE PUMP,
COULD YOU TELL ME HOW TO REPLACE IT WITHOUT DAMAGING ANYTHING ELSE LIKE THE ANSWERS YOU GIVE OTHER WEEKEND MECHANICS

Answer
You will need to check the fuel pressure with a good gauge. You should have about 40 psi with the key on if the pump is ok. Chances are that if she ran it out of gas, the pump is burnt up. It uses gas as a coolant and lubricant and it doesn't take much to hurt it.
Its pretty simple to remove the tank. Just disconnect the fuel lines and electrical connector at the tank, remove the tank straps and the tank is out. To get the pump out of the tank, you need to remove the sending unit(the round part on the top of the tank with the lines on it). There will either be a snap ring or a lock ring holding it in. If it has the lock ring, use a hammer and a screwdriver to turn the ring counterclockwise until it is "unlocked". Pull the sending unit out of the tank. The pump is on the sending unit. You should also replace the stainer, its the screen filter on the bottom of the sending unit, make sure that you put it back the same direction it was so you dont cause a problem with the gas gauge float. I also recommend replacing the fuel filter any time you relace a pump. The fuel filter is located in front of the gas tank. It is the round cylinder on the fuel line.
If you need more help, just ask and I will be happy to help.
