Pontiac Repair: Fuel system, fuel pressure regulator, pontiac sunfire

Question
I have a 1996 Pontiac Sunfire 2.2L engine. Car will not start. I am getting a good spark. I do not hear the fuel pump run. How can I test to see if the fuel pump is bad or if the relay is bad? Also I was told that the fuel pressure regulator might be bad. How can I test these three items. If the fuel pressure regulator is bad will the fuel pump run? If the fuel pump relay is bad will the fuel pump run?

Thanks for your help

Answer
The pump will run with a bad regulator but not if the relay is bad.
The way that I check this is to unplug the fuel pump electrcial connector back at the fuel tank. Using a test light, go from the gray wire to a good ground. Have someone turn the key on, the test light should turn on for about 2 seconds. If it does, then your pump is probably bad. If it doesn't turn on then your relay or the wiring is the problem. Most of the relays on your car are the same part number so you can swap relays to see if it works, just make sure that they have the same number on both relays.
Your regulator is probably not the problem on this engine.
Hope this helps.
