Porsche Repair: 1986 944 porsche rear knocking noise, drive axles, straight shaft

IQ. I got a 944 1986 porsche 4cly. manuel drive. Problem when I drive forward I hear a clap or knocking sound. I think its the u-joint but there is no drive line. Its like in a pipe bolt to the tranny and rear axle. Do I need to pull the rear end or is there a simpler way to get in side the pipe, or do these cars not have drive line but worm gears instead? Last would it also be there rear axle? Car has 172,000 miles i got it at 168,000..

These cars have a straight shaft in the torque tube. No u joints. You need to isolate the noise with the car racked up, and the car in gear and running. You need to find out if it is in the front clutch area, motor mounts, tranny mounts, rear trans axle, or drive axles.
