Porsche Repair: Power Windows on a 81 Porsche 928, power window switch, porsche 928

Question
My question is,  on my power windows, they wasnt working so I took the cover off the relay switch and if I hold the side in where the contacts are when I press the power window switch they work without a problem,  but when I release the contacts they wont work,  I have bought a new relay switch,  it seems to me that the relay isnt getting power to it unless I press the contacts. Please help me with this problem if you can,  Thank You.

Answer
Greg,

Just to remind you, my expertise lies in the older 356 models.  Luckily, many early designs/concepts have lasted since the early 50's and appear in revised forms on 911's, 914's 944's, Boxsters, etc.  Where this happens I'll promise to try to give you the best answer I can.

It seems that you're on the right track looking at the window relay.  If both windows aren't working, which is what you indicated, you've rightly assumed the switches are OK, for the moment.

On the other hand, when you hold the contacts closed at the relay, you are bypassing the first important function of the switch, that is to send a signal, or to activate the relay, when you press the switch.

If you'd do a couple tests, we'll be able to figure this thing out.  If you have the cover off the relay, find the terminal that connects to the switch.  I'd bet it'll be connected to a red/blue wire, if you can see the wires.  In any event, turn on the ignition if necessary and press the switch...at that moment there should be 12v+ at the  relay end of the switch wire.  If so, then the switch IS working fine.  If not, there is an open( a break in that line) or the switch's brown wire is not properly grounded.  This can be checked with a continuity checker.

Let's start there.  Get back to me using the follow-up question feature on All-experts.  Looking forward to hearing from you.
