RV Repair: Rubber Roof, class c motorhome, rubber roofs

Question
Bill, I would like you're opinion on this; I just purchased a used class C motorhome from a reputable dealer just over 6 months ago, it's a 2002 Fleetwood Tioga with 20,000 miles, I have only used this coach 5 times, last time out we got into a lot of rain and the rubber roof leaked real bad on the right side of the rig, upon taking it back they have given me two estimates, (1)patch a small hole on the right side for 2000.00$ or the preferred repair (2) replace the roof, they say it is deteriated for a cost of 4400.00$ ............I know this is a used coach but dang, in 6 months now it needs a roof !!
I feel they should do something here, a friend of mine said rubber roofs have a 10 year warranty from the manufacture but cannot back his talk.

Answer
Bruce, They do have a 10 year warranty on the membrane but leaks usually appear where they have put a hole in the rubber to put vents, skylights, air conditioners, etc. If you have insurance on the coach and this happened as you say, suddenly and in basically one trip it should be covered. That is to say it did happen that way. Insurance doesn't cover maintenance issues but it will cover things like a hole or rip and being a 2002 it is new enough to be allowed a new roof. If you don't have insurance and the roof is not all that bad I would clean it real good with like T.S.P. and then spray vinegar on it and wipe it as well and when it dries I would put liquid roof by Pro Guard on it and call it good. As long as no more water gets in it won't get any worse, or so the theory goes. If you were here I would probably be able to seal it up for about $450.00 or about there. I hope this helps, Bill
