RV Repair: Gas/Elec Fridge, diameter tube, gas elec

Question
I have a 91 Dutchman Classic.  The fridge works great when plugged into electric.  When I switch over to propane the fridge lights up, then makes noises (like something burning, such as dead bugs, or dried up leaves) then flames shoot out the bottom of the fridge just as you would take a peek to check out what s goin on.      Should I have it serviced or do you think it just needs taken apart and cleaned?  If so, where exactly am I looking to clean?      Thanks

Answer
Hi Major:
I think you need to clean it out. The burner is underneath the heat box on the right side of the unit when you open the outer door/cover.  The heat box is the 4 inch or so diameter tube on the right. The inspection cover is a small sheet metal piece, at the bottom,  held on by one or two screws. Take the cover off which will expose the burner. From the sounds of it there is either a bunch of flamable junk in there that needs to be cleaned out or there is a gas leak somewhere. I usually blow debris out with an airline. Once it is cleaned out, carefully watch as someone turns the frig on with gas. If you see a flame anywhere but at the top of the burner grid shut it off in a hurry and have it repaired. If it works fine so much the better, reassemble it all and let it run on gas for a while just to feel safe. Good luck. Keep a fire extiguisher handy just in case.
