RV Repair: Diesel Fuel, april fools joke, veg oil

Question
Hi Dave:

No, I am talking about fuel to run the engine.

I saw the article myself on CNN. The reason why it wasn't being done earlier was it was costing this guy $2.75 per gal for the Wesson oil. Diesel in many parts of the country is now costing over that and expected to rise even higher, making it more cost effective.

For what it's worth, I remember back in high school history that the Nazi's at the end of WWII was using different kinds of oil to power their vehicles when normal diesel fuel was unavailable.

Since I couldn't find a better category and this happens to be on an RV, I thought I would send it to you. If you can't answer it, perhaps you can suggest where to go with it. I have at 350 HP diesel in my motorhome. I saw a couple of days ago on CNN that a guy was burning Wesson Veg Oil that restaurants use for fuel and it was working fine. He was saying that at $2.75 a gallon, it was cheaper than #2 Diesel oil. Is this true? Can it work? Does it void warranties? Increase or decrease in power or mileage? Thanks.
Answer -
You are unclear as to whether he was using it as engine oil, or engine fuel. I get the impression that you are saying he was burning it as fuel. Are you sure this wasn't some sort of hoax or April Fools joke. I'm no diesel mechanic, but if this were possible, why hasn't it been done before? And why isn'y everyone doing it? If it is true, then I'm buying a diesel car and running Wesson oil. There's no way.
Go to www.snopes.com and see if there is anything listed about this being a hoax or myth. Again - there's no way.

Answer
A friend of mine who is a mechanic said that this is indeed true. WoW!!! Then, with all the corn this country could grow, why doesn't the U.S. switch to this? I'll tell you why. Because then the oil companies couldn't increase their profit every quarter by 19%. At least that is my theory. Thanks for the info.
