Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): briggs&stratton

Question
QUESTION: hello i have a briggs motor   numbers are
120412 0128 e1

can you tell me the hp  or cc
who ever had it before me painted all numbers away

ANSWER: It is a 12 cubic inch engine...the first 2 digits in the model number.

The first 2 digits in the serial is the last 2 digits of the year the engine was made.

These engines are typically rated from 4-6 horsepower.

Very good engine.  Been proven in the field for a long time, about 15 years or more.  Briggs is no longer make this engine family so if you like this engine then buy a few while they are still available and stash them away.  Just put a little oil in the cylinder and they can sit on a shelf for decades.

QUESTION: thank you eric  i was told 6.5 but im thinking 5  came off of a pressure washer  other number is 020205fd so im giessing a 02 model correct

Answer
I do recall seeing some 6.5 and even some 6.75 hp stickers on the engines.  HP is really over rated as torque is more important when it comes to engines, mowing, pumping or anything else.

The the alpha characters are a little odd for the code number but I've seen some other weird things.

Most code numbers are all digit with the following breakout.

01061201

YEAR  MONTH    DAY    ASSEMBLY LINE AND MANUFACTURING PLANT
01     06      12          01
