Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): How to wire a push button starter switch on Sears lawn tractor, push button starter switch, starter solenoid

Question
Hi,

I have a Sears Lawn Tractor, model 917.255541.  It will not start using the key operated ignition switch.  I've replaced the solenoid (109081X) and all of the switches, which include; ignition (102972X), interlock-attachment-clutch (109553X), seat (121305X), and interlock-clutch (10445X).  I've still been able to use the tractor, starting it by jumping the terminals on the solenoid.

I'd like to install a push button starter switch, by-passing the "undetected problem area".  Could you advise me of what parts I'd need and specific step by step instructions to accomplish this task?

Thanks,
Ray

Answer
If you install a push button start switch then you would need to wire the charging system to charge the battery and some way to shut-off the engine.

The simplest way is to puchase a switch similar to this one:

Just run 12 volts from the battery to the switch and then connect the other to the starter solenoid exciter.  The link below is a simple schematic:

Do you have a voltmeter to test the system you have?  It might be easier to bypass the safety switches but I would not recommend bypassing them.

I would start with a voltmeter and start by checking the fuse and power going to the switch. There should be 12 volts DC on the B pin of the switch all the time.  When you turn the key there should be 12 volts DC on the S pin that runs to the starter solenoid.  If there is no power on the S pin then there is a safety switch problem.

Did you check the fuse?
