I dont have a volt meter but ordered 1 off ebay.Only electriacal have not bougt is alternator coil and starter.... please any suggestions thanks so much Roy frustated in drought/ fire Tx

Answer
Not an alternator problem and starter should be alright if you can start by jumping/shorting the solenoid.

Most Murrays have one small wire on the starter solenoid.  This small wire needs 12 volts DC when you try and start the engine, all the switches need to be in the correct postion to start.

There is a clutch switch, seat switch and a blade engagement switch.  One of these switches is preventing the 12 volts DC from reaching the starter solenoid.

There is also a fuse in the circuit...did you check the fuse?

Are there any letters or markings on the back of the key switch?

The link below has some good, detailed descriptions on wiring diagrams:

Take a look at the link and let me know when you get you multimeter so I can provide some testing advise.
