Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): John Deere lawn tractor, john deere lawn tractor, john deere lawn

Question
Hello,
I have acquired a John Deere Sabre garden tractor, Model 14.5/38 HYDR, I.D. #GX1438B022410 with a Briggs & Stratton Model 287707 engine.  I cannot get the tractor to start.  When I turn the key their is only a clicking sound.  I have tested the battery and it tests @ 12.7 V.  I boosted the battery from my truck (not running) and still just a clicking sound.  Sounds like a solonoid clicking but I am not familiar with these machines.  Can you tell me what to check or perhaps where I would find a wiring schematic so I can locate the starter solonoid.
Thank-you very much for your time,
Shelley

Answer
I am not familiar with John Deere either, but to locate the solenoid you should follow the positive battery cable from the battery and the other end should be hooked to the solenoid. I would put a 12 volt tester on the starter and when turning the key if you don't get a reading, it's most likely the solenoid.
