Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): b@s-model143.986700, bolt torque specs, friction brake

Question
what is proper torque for 7 crankcase bolts?
why does my engine turn hard?
what is the proper  gear setting with the shaft?

Answer
I looked up your model number on the Sears website and the model number shows the engine is a Tecumseh engine.

The Tecumseh engine model number is Tecumseh VLV66-502514C.

The link below will take you to the service manual:

Your engine may be hard to turn for a varity of reasons.  Is the engine hard to turn with the spark plug removed?  If so, is the blade catching on the deck or is the flywheel friction brake not working due to a bad shut-off cable or bent brake bracket?  Are the valves properly set?  Is the flywheel key sheared? Bent crankshaft?

The repair manual has the crankcase bolt torque specs along with the gear seeting/camshaft timing marks.

Do you have the crankcase apart?
