Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Chainsaw wont turn over correctly after stalling., clutch assembly, question pool

Question
Hi, I'd welcome any suggestions or help in diagnosing a problem.
The engine fault is on a Gardenline GPCS-42cc chainsaw made or imported by Ferm B.V. in the Netherlands and sold by Aldi.
I snagged some greenery which dislodged the chain, the bunched up chain stalled the engine. After reassembly the saw can't be turned over without considerable effort, the pull cord jerks and resists strongly. The engine turns over sweetly if the spark plug is removed. I am attempting to start the saw with the chain brake removed and the cup/sprocket surrounding the clutch assembly spins freely. The flywheel key is intact and the flywheel is aligned correctly. I don't know enough about 2 cycle engines to go any further.
Thank's for reading, Stephen
