Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Small engine for an edger, briggs and stratton, briggs stratton

Question
QUESTION: I have an older McLane edger with a 3 HP Briggs which has died.  I am considering the "Greyhound" 2.5 HP from Harbor Freight. Will this be a bolt on replacement for the old Briggs and Stratton?

ANSWER: Be sure to measure the cranshaft, but it should be pretty close.  The engine is made my Lifan Company in China and is an awesome engine!  You will be very happy with it.

QUESTION: Thanks for your prompt reply.  I heard good things about this engine but...

It will not mount to a Briggs & Stratton mount on my mower or edger.

I notice that the Honda clones in the more expensive stores have a B&S compatible plate mounted on the bottom of the engine.  This did not come from, nor is it available from Harbor Freight.  Is there a reliable source for these "adaptor mounts"?

Thanks again for all your help.

Answer
I looked at one of these edgers yesterday.  The engine should bolt right on as it is what is referred to as a standard SAE Engine mount.

My fear would be the crankshaft length.  Is it long enough?   If to long take a hacksaw to it!

As far as the plate goes, i dont think you need one, but if you do, go to home depot, get yourself a piece of steel plate and drill holes in it to make it match up.
