Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 12.5hp B&S Wont Start, briggs stratton engine, briggs stratton

Question
I have a 2001 Yard Machine with a 12.5hp Briggs & Stratton engine Model # 13AH660F000. It will not start, I have spark and getting gas but it does not try to start just turns and turns. I took out the spark plug and it feels like there is no compression? What do you think I should try next? Does it need head removed and check piston and push rods?

Answer
Hi Chuck,

First off, you need to troubleshoot the no-start condition that exists.  After that possibly look at why the lack of compression is present.

1. Check if the gas cap vent is plugged.Sometimes the gasket can be plugged up with stuff.
2.  Is the gas fresh?
3. Check the air filter to make sure it isn't plugged up.
4.  Is the spark plug properly gapped?  Is it fouled?
5.  Check that the choke is working correctly.  If it doesn't close all the way the engine won't start.
Check for any other problems with the ignition system.

If you have determined that there is little or not compression you can remove the cylinder head, then check the piston, Rings, Connecting rods.  Clean the carbon from the top of the piston and the inside of the cylinder head.  Check for wear.  Same goes for the rings. Any of these can be involved in
compression problems.

Good luck,

Howard B.
