Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 8HP briggs, starter clutch, ball bearings

Question
When I start the motor it will run for 10 seconds or so then make a loud screeching noise then dies. The compression seems good and the recoil works fine. Any clues what I am looking at?

Answer
Hi Wes
It sounds like it is the starter clutch. Is this an older engine? If so, there are 5 ball bearings inside the starter clutch. Remove the screen to gain access. Remove the starter cluch by unscrewing it from the crankshaft. Pry open the cap and you will see the bearings. Clean ball bearings and housing. Lubricate each bearing and slot with light oil or wd-40 and re-assemble. that should take care of the problem.
