Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): John Deere L110 Kohler 17.5hp, john deere l110, fly wheel

Question
Very hard start and back fire through the air cleaner intake.  I have removed the fly wheel, (key is fine), changed spark plug, removed and cleaned carburetor, fuel shut off solenoid is working fine, fuel pump is working fine, spark is strong.  I am convinced that it is a timing issue.  I removed the valve cover to determine if they were operating correctly when I turned the engine over to witness their operation, the thing started, don't know why.  Could you explain how to measure and adjust the valves, if necessary?  Also any more suggestions would be appreciated.

Answer
Here is a link to the mechanic's manual, that give a good guide on
the valve setups  on the mid range Commands.  Your engine might also
have SmartSpark, which can be troublesome as well.
Also make sure you torqued the flywheel nut down sufficiently.
