Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Briggs And Stratton 5hp L head, briggs and stratton, metal tag

Question
I have an old (Very) generator powered by the above engine. It has been unused for a number of years and was running well when last used. It has no spark and I am having trouble removing the flywheel to check the points. my question is which way do I turn the flywheel nut. Clockwise or counter clockwise. Also I cant find any numbers on the motor to indicate what it is other than the very faded HP transfer.

Answer
It should turn counterclockwise to loosen.  there were some engine built to run backwards from normal and the nut would turn clockwise to loosen, but that's not very common.

If the numbers aren't stamped into the sheet metal or on a metal tag, you may have a difficult time establishing which engine it is.  In this case, we try to id it by comparing it to pictures and by trying to determine the age.  If the generator has any marks that id it, that might help.  Thanks, PK.
