Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Honda 3813 Riding Mower Shuts down after several minutes., fuel starvation, engine numbers

Question
I had problems last fall when mowing.  Would run fine for a while then would shut down.  Would restart after a few minutes then run and shut down again. Had local small engine pro change oil and tune it up.  This spring I had the same problem and he suggested I take the hose to the radiator and clean out any dirt plus also drain and change the coolant.  All done and still have same problem.  Have noticed one of the hoses to/from the radiator is hot but the other is not.  Is there a thermostat or some type of valve that needs to be cleaned or replaced.  I can't find any indication in the manual I have.  Would appreciate your suggestions.
Thanks.
Bill

Answer
I am not too familiar with bigger Hondas, especially with water cooled ones.  But it sounds like an issue with the ignition, or valves, but with some issues a fuel starvation thing after getting hot is possible as well.

Which is easy enough to pin down.  Take a can of carb spray and a new plug with you, run the mower until it dies, plug in the new plug on one of the wires, lay the side against the metal of the engine and crank and look for spark, doing this in the evening makes it easier to see.
If you have spark, remove the air filter, and spray carb cleaner
into the carb, if it starts then dies, then it is a fuel problem.

Try both of those, and see is you can find some engine numbers engraved into the block, and we can look up the valve specs.

Thanks,
