Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): to much oil, starter cord, check oil

Question
To much oil was put in my B & S lawn mower It is spewing oil and lots of smoke is coming out. Will it burn off or will it burn up the engine? Do I need to take it in?

Answer
Remove/drain the excess oil.  Remove the spark plug and pull the rope.  Watch the spark plug hole to see if oil squirts out.  Continue pulling the starter cord until no more oil squirts out the spark plug hole.

Check oil for correct level.  Re-install spark plug.  You can run the engine at this point but it may smoke if oil entered the muffler.  You can remove the muffler and soak in parts cleaner to help remove excess oil inside the muffler.  It will still take a while to stop smoking even after cleaning the muffler.  You can replace the muffler if you wish but it is not necessary.
