Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): petrol in mower, leaded gas

Question
i have a mower that uses leaded petrol ihave difficulty finding what alternatives do i have or is it ok to use un leaded.?

Answer
It should be okay to use unleaded.  The primary reason for using leaded was out of concern for the valve seats not being hard enough for unleaded fuel.  But I have numerous old engines that I use unleaded in and have never had a problem.  The other concern was for detonation, actually pre-detonantion, where the fuel is ignited from hot spots in the chamber too early.  Lead in the fuel helps to prevent that.

I would ask around about what additives are being used in the new gas and if they will have the ability to address these issues.  In the US when leaded fuel was phased out, we had some problems for the first few years.  All of us Hotrodders were installing hardened valve seats in our engine heads.  Then companies started selling lead substitutes to add to the gas.  So you should also look around for that sort of product if it appears your gasoline won't have the proper additives already in it.

Let me know if you have any questions.  Thanks, PK.
