Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Put together 6.75HP Tecumseh, two pints, gear tooth

Question
QUESTION: Last fall i hit a stump and bent the shaft on my mower. I hate throwing things away and love a challenge, so I took it apart to see what else might be damaged. It looks like I just need a new crankshaft and the mounting cover which got cracked. The parts will cost me $150 which I think is worth it. Now for my problem. I am not sure how I am going to reassemble the engine to ensure that it is timed right with respect to crank and camshaft position. How do I do this? Unfortunately, I did not mark the gears when I disassembled the rod and shaft.

Appreciate any guidance you can give.

Thank you.

ANSWER: Hello Jamshed:

>>There is a Mark (-) on the Crankshaft Gear Tooth and a Dot(.) between the Teeth on the Cam that have to be Matched for the Valve Timing to be Correct.

QUESTION: John: Excellent answer. I found the two marks on the cam and crank gears. Will they align at two pints in the cycle, so I have to make sure the piston is compressing when I align them? I went to Sears and ordered all the parts I will need (crankshaft, mounting plate and gasket and seals.) Although this is going to cost me more than a new mower, it has now become a personal challenge. My wife thinks I will fail, which is a great motivator for me!!! 
While I wait for the parts to arrive, I have three more questions. I took the nut off the top of the flywheel. Now how does the flywheel come off? Can I just pull it off with a pulley puller or is there another locking pin or something? Next, there is a small gear assembly inside the plate. I’m not sure of its function, but how do I pull it off the old plate? Is it just pressed in? And finally, I had to buy the lower oil seal and want to know how I get that into the new plate. Do I just use a dowel and mallet to press it in?  Thanks so much for all your help.

Answer
Hello Again Jamshed:

>>The Timing Marks will Align the Cam and Piston Correctly when you Assemble the Engine.
>>Since this is a Tecumseh Engine, I have a PDF Site Addy that May Assist you. http://www.tecumsehpower.com/CustomerService/BSI.pdf  .  >>This Site Addy; http://www.outdoordistributors.com/Tecumseh/tmain.html has a Link to a PDF Trouble-Shooting Guide. Simply Select the Free PDF Download for the Tecumseh Trouble-Shooting Guide.
>>You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.outdoordistributors.com/ and Select the T. Then Select Tecumseh. Then Select Don't have Part Numbers. Then Enter the Model Numbers . Then Select your Model and Download the File for Online Viewing.
>>The Following is the Instruction File I Made for Removing the Flywheel from Most Mower Engines for Replacing the Flywheel Key, the Stator/Charging Coil/Magneto and the Point Set on Older Engines without Electronic Ign Coils.
>>It is the Basics and if you have a Question, Please Ask. Any Input to Make this File Better is Appreciated.
>>***Disconnect the Coil Wire from the Spark Plug. Remove the Blower Housing (metal engine cover).
>>Remove the Coil.
>>Remove the Flywheel Nut or Starter Cup (Depends on the Model).
>>Now Attach a Steering Wheel Puller to the Flywheel Using the Threaded Holes in the Flywheel.
>>Tighten the Puller.
>>Now Hit the Puller with a Hammer. Repeat this Procedure Until the Flywheel Pops Up or can be Lifted Off the Crankshaft.
>>On Some Models you Can Not Use a Puller and and the Jaws of a Standard Puller will Not Fit. On these Type Engines you can Use a Pry Bar and a Pipe Cap that is Slightly Larger than the Crankshaft. Place the Pipe Cap Over the Crankshaft to Protect it. Place the Pry Bar Under the Thick Section of the Flywheel and Pull Up Against the Flywheel.
>>**BE CAREFUL  DO NOT PUT A HOLE IN THE BLOCK UNDER THE FLYWHEEL** >>Now Hit the Pipe Cap that is on the Crankshaft (covered with the Pipe Cap). Repeat the Procedure Until the Flywheel can be Lifted Off the Crankshaft.
>>*** Be Sure you have the Flywheel Torqued to the Proper Torque (I require the Model and Spec/Type Numbers Off the Engine to Provide the Proper Torque) and Set the Coil Gap to .020in..***
