Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): ayp mower wont go, engine model type, clutch pedal

Question
QUESTION: When i push the brake pedal in it stops the mower just fine.  However when i release pressure from the pedal the mower will not move unless i physicaly pull the pedal back with my foot.  I dont know if I have an adjustment issue or if i need to replace something.  Any help would be greatly appreciated

ANSWER: Hello Danny:

>>From your Description it Sounds like the Brake Spring has Broken of Fallen Off. The Spring Releases the Brake Linkage and Returns it on its Own and you should Not have to Pull the Brake/Clutch Pedal by Hand.
>>AYP is Now a Husqvarna Product.
>>I could Not Locate a Microfiche Using the Numbers you Sent me, However, I did Locate a Model YTH1842.
>>Are there Any More Model Numbers Located on the Body of this Unit?
>>What is the Year of Production?
>>Send me the Engine Model, Type/Spec and Code Numbers, Please. With these I can Locate the Year of Engine Production and Possible Locate the Year Model of the Unit.
>>Thanks.

QUESTION: Thank you for your response to my original question.  I was able to locate a parts list breakdown of my mower and i ordered and replaced the missing spring.  However the brake pedal still does not release unless i pull it back with my foot.  I also seem to have a problem with the motor or drivetrain of somekind.  The engine starts great, Idles at high and low throttle, but at times it will not even turn the drive belt. And when it does it seems to be very lurchy.  The engine never sounds as though it is struggling or bogging out. It will always run the mower deck.  I thought maybe it was fuel related but the engine runs great.  I am wondering if the brake issue is somehow related or what other issues could be causing my problems.  My mower is an AYP Yard Pro.  Model no. y1844  this is the only number under the seat.  I have found schematics for it on the internet.  The motor is a kohler magnum 18  model MV18S.   Spec NO. 58561    HP/KW  18/13.4

ANSWER: Hello Again Danny:

1->>If you Replaced the Spring and Installed it Correctly and you Still have to Pull the Clutch/Brake Lever Back by Hand, then Check the Idler Arm Assy and make Sure it is Moving Freely.
>>It Sounds like the Idler Arm Assy is Rusty and is Sticking. It should Move Freely.
2->>Check the Belt Routing and All the Pulleys and Idlers in the Drive System.
>>From your Description it Sounds like there is a Bad Idler Pulley the Belt is Routed Incorrectly. The Lurching is Usually a Sign of a Bad Idler Pulley, Bad/Stretched Belt or the Belt Incorrectly Routed.
>>If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.

Good Luck

QUESTION: Well John thank you for all your help so far.  I have managed to make the brake situation a little better by replacing the brake return spring and tightening the brake however it still doesnt function quite right.  However i will take the progress.  I still am having trouble with the drive of the mower.  It still seems to be slipping and lurchy.  It doesnt really like hills.  The motor still sounds strong.  I put on a new belt and checked the two idler pulleys this model has.  Both seem to be functioning.  Could my engine pully possibly be worn.  My other confusion comes from the fact that i cannot find a way to tighten the drive belt.  I put a new spring on the front idler pully and this had no effect.  God Bless you for all your help, I surely need it.  I would love to take it to a shop but have no money.  I was given the mower.  Thank you again
